Prehensile Interaction |
|
Investigations on reach-to-grasp actions in various domains of psychology have consistently shown that the natural kinematics of prehension allows for predicting the object a human is going to grab and sometimes even the subsequent actions that will be carried out with that object. These insights promise great opportunities for substantially improved interaction in 3D environments, provided that the hand kinematics information is extracted and evaluated on the fly and instantaneously incorporated in the interface. In this project, we explore the applicability of prehensile information to design natural user interfaces for the interaction with computer-generated virtual environments. |

SafeXR |

In virtual environments, users' visual and auditory perception is replaced by computer-generated stimuli, thus, knowing the positions of actual objects is crucial for physical safety. While some solutions exist, these are limiting the IVE design or depend on the hardware setup. Moreover, most solutions cannot handle lost tracking, erroneous tracker calibration, or moving obstacles. In this project, we develop stand-alone hardware devices to alert IVE users for potential collisions with real-world objects. |

Real Virtual Environments |

In this project, we investigate the benefits and the limitations, as well as different implementation options for smooth immersion into HMD-based IVEs. We evaluate our concepts in a series of user studies, in which we have tested users' awareness, reality judgment, and experience in the IVE when using different transition techniques. |

Touching the Void |
|
Recent developments in the area of touch and display technologies have suggested combining multi-touch systems and stereoscopic visualization. Stereoscopic perception requires each eye to see a slightly different perspective of the same scene, which results in two distinct projections on the display. Thus, if the user wants to select a 3D stereoscopic object in such a setup, the question arises where she would touch the 2D surface to indicate the selection. In this project, we utilize different hardware and perception techniques to enable touch on stereoscopically displayed objects, when the input is constrained to a 2D surface. |
